Prof. Hassan Ibrahim, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) at Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, Niger State, has urged Nigerian universities to adopt innovative strategies to tackle the financial management challenges plaguing the Nigerian University System (NUS).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Delivering the 3rd Annual Bursary Lecture of the Federal University of Technology , Minna on Thursday, October 24, 2024, at TETFund Lecture Theatre, School of Information and Communication Technology (SICT), Main Campus, Prof. Ibrahim emphasized the critical role of ethical financial practices in ensuring sound financial management. His lecture, titled \u201cThe Role of Accountants in Enhancing Ethical Financial Practices in the University System,\u201d underscored the importance of ethical stewardship in the effective utilization of resources, maintaining stakeholder trust, and safeguarding the reputation of academic institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Addressing both internal and external financial management challenges, as well as issues related to governance, infrastructure, and human resources, Prof. Ibrahim highlighted the indispensable role of accountants. He noted that accountants contribute significantly to financial integrity by ensuring transparency and accuracy in reporting, maintaining robust internal controls, conducting audits, and fostering ethical decision-making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs custodians of financial integrity, accountants are essential in promoting transparency, accountability, and the responsible allocation of university resources,\u201d Prof. Ibrahim said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also stressed the importance of adhering to institutional rules and prioritizing financial needs to ensure judicious use of limited resources within the university system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Representing the Vice-Chancellor of FUT, Minna Prof. Faruk Adamu Kuta, at the event, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Engr. Prof. Abdullahi Mohammed, expressed hope that the lecture would provide participants with valuable insights for improving accountability and ethical standards in university financial management. Prof. Kuta commended Prof. Ibrahim’s selection as the guest lecturer, noting his exemplary background in accounting and finance. He also praised the efforts of Mrs. Hadiza Goje, FUT, Minna’s Bursar, for her innovative approach to managing the University’s finances, which has positively impacted the institution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her welcome address, Bursar, FUT, Minna and Chairperson, Association of Bursars of Nigerian Universities (ABNU), Mrs. Goje, the event convener, described the lecture\u2019s theme as timely and relevant. She emphasized the broader role of accountants beyond record-keeping, highlighting their responsibility to champion integrity, transparency, and accountability in financial management. Mrs. Goje expressed optimism that the lecture would inspire participants to explore new ways of strengthening financial practices within universities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
