The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUT Minna), Prof. Faruk Adamu Kuta, has received a delegation from the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) on an accreditation visit to six engineering programmes in the University.
The programmes, domiciled in the School of Infrastructure, Process Engineering and Technology (SIPET) and the School of Electrical Engineering and Technology (SEET), include Telecommunications Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Materials and Metallurgical Engineering.

The accreditation exercise commenced on Monday, 23 February 2026, at the Academic Publishing Centre, Main Campus, beginning with brief presentations at SIPET, Board Room by the Heads of Departments whose programmes are being evaluated.

In his welcome address, Prof. Kuta expressed appreciation to COREN for its sustained commitment to maintaining quality and standards in engineering practice in Nigeria. He noted that the Council’s regulatory role continues to ensure proper coordination and professionalism within the engineering sector.

The Vice-Chancellor stated that the departments had made the necessary preparations for the exercise and expressed confidence that the visiting team’s observations and recommendations would further strengthen the programmes.

He urged the Council to assist institutions in identifying industry partners to provide students with practical, hands-on experience during and after their studies, particularly in areas such as manufacturing and fabrication.

Prof. Kuta also proposed closer collaboration between COREN and the National Universities Commission (NUC) to harmonise accreditation exercises, suggesting that joint visits would reduce duplication and enhance efficiency.
Presenting the address of the COREN Council and its Engineering Accreditation Committee, the Team Lead, Engr. Prof. Nurudeen M. Musa, FNSE, reaffirmed that accreditation of engineering programmes is a core mandate of the Council as part of its quality assurance responsibility. He explained that the exercise is designed to ensure that engineering graduates possess the competence required to compete globally.

He added that COREN’s adoption of Outcome-Based Education (OBE) has significantly improved the quality of engineering training in Nigeria, enabling graduates to practice in over 26 countries worldwide.

Engr. Prof. Musa emphasised that the accreditation exercise is not a fault finding mission but a collaborative effort aimed at improving the quality of engineering programmes and their graduates. He called for full cooperation in providing all necessary documents and information to facilitate a smooth exercise, noting that the team would reconvene at the end of the visit to present its findings.

Earlier, the Dean of SEET, Engr. Prof. Babatunde Adegboye, and the Dean of SIPET, Engr. Prof. Olufemi Olugboji, welcomed the COREN accreditation team on behalf of their respective schools and expressed optimism for a successful and productive accreditation exercise.
