The Nigerian Institute of Soil Science (NISS) conducted a one-day training workshop themed “The Application of Climate Smart Agricultural Practices to Aid the Promotion of Food Security” on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, at the Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUTMINNA)’s Entrepreneurship Centre, Main Campus.
The workshop was designed to equip agricultural extension workers and farmers from the North Central Geo-political Zone of Nigeria with the latest skills and techniques in Climate Smart Agriculture. These practices are essential for mitigating the adverse effects of climate change and improving agricultural yields, ultimately contributing to the nation’s food security goals.
In his opening remarks, the NISS Zonal Coordinator for North-Central, Prof. Akim O. Osunde, emphasized the critical need to address climate-related challenges, such as erratic rainfall, rising temperatures, pest infestations, flooding, and prolonged droughts, which pose significant threats to food security.
He highlighted that the workshop’s focus was on promoting agricultural productivity while ensuring environmental sustainability and enhancing resilience to the increasingly unpredictable climate conditions.
