NIMechE MINNA CHAPTER HOLDS 8TH AGM/CONFERENCE AS FUTMINNA ACADEMICS, INNOVATORS SHINE AT AWARDS

The Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers (NIMechE), Minna Chapter, a division of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, successfully hosted its 8th Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Conference on Saturday, September 7, 2024, at the Scientific Equipment Development Institute (SEDI) in Minna, Niger State. Themed “Present Economic Challenges: The Role of Mechanical Engineers,”the event emphasized the importance of mechanical engineers in tackling Nigeria’s economic difficulties, with a focus on innovation, industrialization, and sustainability.

In his welcome address, the Chairman of NIMechE Minna Chapter, Engr. Dr. Akonyi Nasiru Sule, underscored the need for mechanical engineers to think creatively and address the pressing economic challenges. He praised the awardees for their remarkable achievements in innovation, urging them to continue their exceptional work.

Engr. Dr. Mohammed L. Yarima, Chairman of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Minna Branch, delivered the keynote address, highlighting the crucial role mechanical engineers play in industrial development, renewable energy solutions, and agricultural advancement. He called on engineers to contribute their skills to driving Nigeria toward a diversified and sustainable economy.

In a separate keynote, Engr. Dr. Esther Nneka Anosike-Francis, a lecturer at Nile University, Abuja, emphasized that mechanical engineers transform ideas into reality, impacting individuals, communities, and broader economic systems. She urged Nigerian engineers to rise to the occasion and be at the forefront of building a resilient economy.

Engr. Dr. Abubakar Sadeeq Mohammed, Vice President-North of the Association of Nigerian Inventors (ANI), spoke on the importance of promoting innovation and invention in Nigeria. He encouraged stakeholders to support invention and innovation clubs, especially in academic institutions like FUT Minna.

The event also celebrated the 10th anniversary of the NIMechE Minna Chapter. One of the highlights was the presentation of awards recognizing excellence in innovation and outstanding contributions to various fields. FUT Minna staff, researchers, and inventors took center stage, receiving multiple awards for their impressive work.

Awardees included:

  • Prof. Hussaina Anthony Makun, Centre Leader, ACEMFS
  • Engr. Prof. Zinash D. Osunde, Dean, SIPET
  • Engr. Prof. Moses Aderemi Olutoye, Director, DRID
  • Engr. Prof. Mathew Sunday Abolarin, Department of Mechanical Engineering
  • Prof. Jimoh Oladejo Tijani, Coordinator, IPTTO

Additionally, Engr. Prof. Abdulrahman Asipita Salawu, Vice-Chancellor of CUSTECH, Kogi State, was also honored with an award.

The conference highlighted the critical role of mechanical engineers in addressing Nigeria’s economic challenges, emphasizing innovation, collaboration, and sustainable practices for the betterment of the country.
