The 112th Inaugural Lecture of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, was presented on February 27, 2025, by Prof. Chidi Evans Egwim (FNSBMB), a distinguished professor of biochemistry and Deputy Director at the African Centre of Excellence in Biotechnology and Vaccine Development. The lecture, themed “Enzymes: Redefining the Axiom ‘Jack of All Trades'”, was held at the University Auditorium, Main Campus.
Prof. Egwim highlighted the vast applications of enzymes across multiple industries, including leather and textiles, biosensing, cosmetics, solid waste management, biofuels, agriculture, animal feed, and environmental sustainability. He emphasized the role of enzymes in revolutionizing materials science, particularly in construction, where his team has developed Zymocrete—an enzymatic formulation that enhances the strength and durability of cement concrete and clay bricks.
He further elaborated on the critical role of enzymes in agriculture-based industries such as dairy, fisheries, poultry, and food processing, as well as in fuel, pharmaceuticals, medicine.and cosmetics,. With increasing global demands and dwindling natural resources, Prof. Egwim stressed that enzyme technology holds immense potential for sustainable industrial and medical advancements.
The event concluded with a speech from the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Faruk Adamu Kuta, who expressed his appreciation to the attendees and wished them safe travels. As a mark of recognition for his contributions to science and society, Prof. Egwim was presented with a plaque, certificate, and various gifts from groups within and outside the University.
