FUTMINNA CIVIL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT HOSTS 3RD INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON AI IN INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT

The Department of Civil Engineering, School of Infrastructure, Process Engineering and Technology (SIPET), Federal University of Technology, Minna, successfully hosted its 3rd International Civil Engineering Conference (ICEC 2024) on Monday, February 24, 2025, at NITDA Hall, Main Campus.

Themed “Advancing the Frontiers of Infrastructure Development through Artificial Intelligence,” the conference explored AI-driven innovations in civil engineering.

In his opening remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Faruk Adamu Kuta, highlighted the importance of such conferences in fostering idea generation and problem-solving. He appreciated the keynote speakers for their contributions to advancing education and urged them to be critical in their presentations.

Welcoming participants, the Head of the Civil Engineering Department, Engr. Prof. Mohammed Saidu, expressed gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor and University Management for their support. He emphasized the relevance of the conference theme, noting AI’s transformative role in civil engineering, particularly in innovation, efficiency, and sustainability.

The keynote address was delivered by Prof. Abdulhameed Danjuma Mambo, Head of the Civil Engineering Department and Dean of Environmental Science at Nile University of Nigeria, Abuja. He dwelled on the vast potential of AI in infrastructure development, stressing its role beyond automation to fostering resilience and sustainability in growing urban landscapes.

Another keynote speaker, Dr. Jacob O. Ikotun, a Senior Lecturer at Durban University of Technology, South Africa, discussed AI applications in civil engineering. He highlighted how AI enhances infrastructure efficiency, safety, and sustainability, predicting that continued advancements in AI will further revolutionize the industry.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks by the Conference Committee Chairman, Engr. Prof. Mohammed M. Alhaji, who appreciated the Vice-Chancellor, principal officers, keynote speakers, postgraduate students, sponsors, and all contributors to the conference’s success.
